Standard lengths are 12", 14", 16", 18", 20", 22" and 24". Standard widths vary somewhat depending on the lengths. The narrowest common width is 1/2 the height (for example: 12" x 6", 14" x 7", 16" x 8" etc.). Dimensions of 13" are traditionally avoided. In recent years, with the influx of slate from outside the US, metric sizes are increasingly common. Slate sizes outside the "normal" range are available but are often more expensive due to the non-standard production requirements.

Slate roofing is normally priced by the "square." One square of slate is the amount of slate necessary to cover 100 square feet of roof area. The number of slates required to cover 100 square feet of roof varies with the slate size. 

Standard thickness for most slate production is "nominal 1/4" (approximately 3/16" to 5/16"). Thicker slate generally costs more and because of the increased weight, is more expensive to ship and install. Weight per square increases with the thickness. The rule of thumb is 750 pounds for one square of nominal 1/4" slate and increasing proportionally with an increase in thickness. (1500 pounds per square for 1/2" slate, 2250 pounds per square for 3/4" and so on...)
